The Real Key to Freedom Isn’t What You Think

May 02, 2025

Let me ask you a question: Have you ever thought, “If I just had $250,000 in the bank, I’d finally be free?”

I used to believe that too.

In fact, early in my real estate journey, I told myself if I could just save up $10,000, I’d never stress about money again. That number felt massive to me at the time. I had never had that much sitting in a bank account before.

But here’s what happened…

I hit that $10,000 goal. Then it became $20,000. Then $50,000. Then $100,000. Then $250,000. Then $500,000.

And one day, I opened my bank statement and saw $554,000 sitting there.

Did I finally feel free? Nope.

I just moved the goalpost again.

“If I can just hit a million,” I thought, “then I’ll never worry again.”

What We Think Will Make Us Free… Doesn’t

Let’s be honest: Most of us are building businesses and crafting our lifestyles in hopes of experiencing freedom.

And on the surface, that makes sense:

  • We want control over our time.
  • We want to build financial margin
  • We want to be our own boss.

But here’s what I’ve learned: Real freedom isn’t found in your business success, your finances, or your calendar.

Those things can all help—but they won’t make you free.

You can:

  • Be debt-free and still be consumed with financial worry.
  • Control your calendar and still be mentally absent from your family.
  • Own a business that gives you time freedom and still spend every waking hour thinking about the next deal.

True freedom isn’t about what’s in your account. It’s about what’s in your heart.

The Freedom of Contentment

Whether you have little or much, discontentment will rob you of joy.

Discontentment says:

  • “You don’t have enough.”
  • “You’re not there yet.”
  • “If you just had a little more…”

But contentment—the kind that anchors your soul—says:

  • “This is enough.”
  • “You are okay.”
  • “You can breathe.”

I’m not here to demonize ambition. Ambition is a gift when it’s pointed in the right direction.

But if your ambition:

  • Steals your peace,
  • Eats up your joy,
  • Costs you your family or your faith,

…it may be misdirected.

You can build a business and a bank account and still feel empty if you don’t learn how to be content.

Let’s Talk About It

I want to start a conversation around this. If you’ve ever:

  • Struggled with feeling like “it’s never enough,”
  • Reached a financial goal only to feel disappointed,
  • Wondered why freedom still feels far off even when you’ve hit your milestones…

…I’d love to hear from you.

What number did you once think would make you “free”? And did it?
